Setting the Atmos-fear
Herb Injure was a key maker in the town of Hallow Hollow in the 1800s. He was feared by the town for his Halloween premonitions of misfortune, earning him the name "The Harbinger." He spent most of the year locked in his manor house behind the cemetery, the only sign of life being black smoke rising from his workshop.
Every Halloween, Herb would quietly glide through town, delivering misfortunes. He always wore a rune-covered cloak and a six-sided amulet necklace with 6 gemstones. The townspeople believed he was sent by the devil to punish them and the rumors and fear spread like wildfire. One year, the townspeople ambushed Herb, stealing his amulet and using 6 keys to lock him in the Mausoleum. They scattered the keys and amulet throughout the graveyard, but as they went to leave, black smoke started to rise from Herb's workshop. There on the porch of the manor was the ghost of The Harbinger waving at them before dissipating.
Even though they had killed Herb, the misfortunes continued every year. Halloween was banned in Hallow Hollow, but a few rebellious teens still visit the graveyard to try and see The Harbinger's ghost at midnight. This Halloween as you enter the graveyard, the gate slams shut, and the only way out is to face The Harbinger at the Mausoleum. You have 45 minutes to collect as many keys and uncover as much of the story as you can before the clock strikes 12. The more you uncover, the more likely you are to make it to the other side. But be cautious, the cemetery comes alive on Halloween.

Exterior Entrance
Various missing person posters can be seen along an abandoned street as you approach a large building in the distance. On closer inspection, all the names on the posters are puns, ex. “Missing: Mia Digknitty.” Above the missing posters are signs with various rules such as “no decorations,” “no candy,” and “No dressing up as other people.” Mixed in with the “Missing” posters are posters of a man dressed in a black trench coat with “Beware the Harbinger” written beneath.
Cars line the street in various states of decay, some with doors and windows still open. From one of the cars you hear a radio broadcast saying “It’s that awful fall holiday we don’t speak of again. Be careful and don’t let you’re teens near the graveyard tonight. The Harbinger will be out at midnight. And remember, no celebrating the holiday at home.” You pass a decrepit sign saying “Welcome to Hallow Hollow: a perfectly docile community.” Someone has spray-painted “Escape from the Harbinger” overtop of the slogan. You enter into a queue just behind the sign as fog emanates from the door of the building, beckoning you to enter.
Indoor Queue
As you enter the building, you see a full moon (glowing purple, orange or white) above an imposing manor in the distance. Black smoke rises from the chimney and screams echo from the porch. As your eyes adjust to the darkness, you spot rusty gates labeled “Hallow Cemetery” and proceed through a winding queue of wrought-iron fence.
In the queue, rusty TVs show a vlog by Thad Nocturnous, a self-centered paranormal investigator who acts scared of his own shadow. He urges you to download the Hallow Hollow app to track your progress and help his subscriber count go up. His mom walks in and Thad screams and slams the door. He says you only have 45 minutes until midnight to prepare for your encounter with The Harbinger. He also mentions an amulet before it was confiscated.
At the end of the queue, a caretaker dressed in a black cloak covered in runes hands you a six-sided amulet necklace. You must use it to obtain as many keys and supplies as you can before midnight. When the clock strikes 12, your amulet will glow red and vibrate, signaling it’s time to head to the mausoleum and face The Harbinger. You can also link the amulet to the Hallow Hollow app before entering.
As you enter through the cemetery arch, you hear rusty gates slam behind you. In the graveyard, you hear snoring and muffled talking coming from the graves. Some gravestones have eyes that stare at you and the ground pulsates like something (or someone) is pushing up from underneath.

Interactive Characters
You can interact with several characters throughout the graveyard to learn more about The Harbinger and Hallow Hollow. The grave digger is at his shack, but the other characters are constantly roaming the graveyard.
The Grave Digger
(Main caretaker to the cemetery, Interactive animatronic character)
As you enter the graveyard, you see a small shed with an opening on the front and inside is an animated figure of a decrepit grave digger (think The Crypt Keeper). His gaunt face looks like skeleton covered in a thin layer of skin. His large, sunken eyes are a piercing blue that stand out among the drab shack. As you approach you hear the grave digger saying phrases such as:
“You won’t get very far without some advice.”
Come talk to the old Grave Digger; I bet I can dig up some answers for you. [maniacal laugh].”
The Grave Digger is very sarcastic and put-upon and seems bored to have to talk to you. The voice of the Grave Digger is a live actor who can personalize responses to each guest.

Sample Interactions:
Guest: “Are there any keys near here?”
Grave Digger: “Does it look like I have a metal detector in here???? I can’t tell you exactly where, that would be cheating. But if you’re really at the end of your rope, I would check over on Hangman’s Hill for something to grab on to. [maniacal laugh]”
Guest: “How long ago did The Harbinger die?”
Grave Digger: “It was 1866 when the townspeople put a stop to his dark premonition nonsense, but some things are more powerful than death. They may have killed him, but the misfortune continued. [maniacal laugh]”
Guest: “Why did you become a grave digger?”
Grave Digger: “Because the dead don’t interrupt me with inane questions like that. Plus, the benefits package has really improved ever since the worms unionized. [maniacal laugh]”
Thad Nocturnous
(Paranormal investigator & streamer)
Thad is an early-20s paranormal investigator and wannabe social media star. When you interact with Thad he will clumsily ask you if you follow him and tell you to be sure to “like, comment, and subscribe.” He will randomly scream in terror over any noise. If you talk to him for long enough, he tells you that he thinks The Harbinger is some kind of demon that has doomed Hallow Hollow.
Story Beat: Thad tells you that Herb was know as The Harbinger because he used to tell townspeople terrible things were going to happen to them and that now, seeing his ghost is a sign of impending doom. Thad claims that ever since he saw The Harbinger last Halloween his subscriber count hasn’t gone up.
Reginald/Regina “Reggie” Fortesque
(Ghostly teenager)
Reggie is very pale teenager, dressed in 1800s newsboy attire, holding a newspaper from the day Herb was killed in 1866. Their clothing and makeup are all in grayscale, making them standout in the crowd. Despite their ghostly appearance, Reggie will try to convince you they aren't a ghost, but another teen trying to see The Harbinger. They use old-timey phrases, but clumsily throw in modern slang. “I was merely moseying through the garden, when I… I mean… my great grandfather saw the townsfolk, mad as a march hare, walking towards Herb’s manor trying to ride him out of of town on a rail. They were definitely bussing if I may say so, fam.”
Story Beat: Reggie tells you how the townspeople were tired of Herb’s awful premonitions and that they locked him in the mausoleum to die one Halloween night.
Bryce Wretchfield
(Modern teenager)
Bryce is an aggressive teenage "bro" who has lived in Hallow Hollow his whole life. He talks in an exaggerated California accent (think Bill and Ted or Jeff Spicoli). He tries to convince you he's not scared by being overly aggressive. "I'm not afraid of some crusty, old ghost and I have no problem throwing down if The Harbinger wants to square up." He tells you that he’s been coming here every Halloween and the gates have never shut before.
Story Beat: Bryce sees the amulet around your neck and asks where you found it. His grandfather told him that The Harbinger used that amulet to cast spells on the town and bring misfortune. He then tells you how the townspeople took the amulet and used six keys to lock Herb in the mausoleum, scattering the keys throughout the graveyard.
Cordelia Grimthorne
(Goth Librarian)
Cordelia is a local librarian who is infatuated with death. She wears a black skirt with white jack-o-lanterns, heavy black boots and a black sweater, along with black hair and lipstick. She says she’s been communicating with Herb and that she’s here to meet him. She describes their “dates” as seances where he makes her speak in tongues.
Story Beat: Cordelia claims Herb told her the townspeople were nasty and judgmental to him and they had the misfortune coming. She claims that Herb is not an evil spirit, but he was pushed too far.
Key Puzzles
There are 5 keys to collect in the graveyard, with the 6th one inside the mausoleum. To collect each key, you must complete a riddle or challenge.
Key #1: Hangman's Hill
One of the first landmarks you see is a large, gnarled tree on a small hill with six nooses hanging from a branch. There is a plaque in front of the tree.
Plaque: “Hangman’s Hill. On this site, six lost souls became permanent residents of the graveyard at the end of a rope. Can you pull the ropes in the correct order of their usage? It could be the key to your survival.”
Each rope has a sign with a set of initials painted on them (the app shows the full names, making it easier). You have to find the corresponding name on a gravestone and make note of the death date. If you pull the ropes in the order each person died, you hear a ghostly swoosh and a triumphant melody as a six-sided pad on the plaque illuminates. You scan your amulet to the pad and one of the six gems on the amulet is illuminated.
Story beat: If you click on each rope in the app, you get a short backstory on each person that was hung. They are all for minor crimes like “leaving the outhouse door open.” This shows you that the residents of Hallow Hollow are quick to condemn people and put them to death.

Key #2: Caretaker Quarters
On the left edge of the graveyard is a small shack with a familiar plaque out front.
Plaque: “Caretaker Quarters. The next key to your escape is hidden in plain sight. But unfortunately the caretakers also keep everything they own in plain sight. Can you find the key?”
The window of the shack is a large screen showing dozens of tools and a key hung on the wall. Below it is a control stick that moves a ghostly white hand across the screen. Use it to grab the key and a keyhole will appear somewhere on screen as wind gusts start blowing tools back and forth. Avoid the flying tools as you move the key towards the keyhole because if a tool hits the key, it drops to the bottom of the screen and you have to pick it up again. If you can get the key to the keyhole, the same ghosty swoosh and triumphant melody plays. Press your amulet to the pad to collect the key.
Story beat: As you play the game, there are newspapers stuck to the wall behind the screen. They are all dated 1866 and the headlines all relate to Halloween, saying things like “Halloween Leads to Demonic Possession,” “Pagan Holiday Brings Misfortune,” and “Harbinger Ruins Harvest Again.” These headlines show you how much the town fears Halloween and why they have banned it.
Key #3: Pet Cemetery
In the front corner of the graveyard, you see a small fenced-in area with a sign marked “Pet Cemetery” and familiar plaque.
Plaque: “Pet Cemetery. Every good boy and girl had a favorite toy and sometimes you can still hear them begging to play with it. Listen and look at each grave to find the key pet you’re looking for.”
Below the plaque is a screen displaying a riddle, which gives you a hint of which animal to look for. This riddle changes periodically.
Sample Riddle: “Spot was squeaky and liked to run, but would never get very far. That’s the circle of life.”
Walking through the pet cemetery you hear animal sounds coming from each grave. There are all types of animals buried here like cats, dogs, hamsters, snakes, birds, elephants, tigers, skunks, raccoons, bats and more. Each grave also has a carving of something the animal enjoyed. In the case of this sample riddle, you see a small hamster grave with a wheel carved into it. Once you find the correct grave from the riddle, scan your amulet to the pad on the side and you’ll hear the familiar swoosh and triumphant melody.
Story beat: In between the various pet sounds, you also hear audio clips from townspeople talking about the Harbinger. The quotes tell specific things that happened to the townspeople after they disrespected Herb.
“All I did was bump into that crusty old man, Herb, and now I have sores all over my mouth.”
“He tried to take the last apple at the general store, but I grabbed it first and now all of my crops are dying.”

Key #4: Hallow Heights
In the back corner of the graveyard, you see another fenced-in area with ornate graves and carvings. You have entered the area of the cemetery reserved for the upper class of Hallow Hollow know as Hallow Heights. In front of a row of 6 graves are 6 stones on the ground and a plaque.
Plaque: “Hallow Heights. Can you hear that? Even in death they have the best taste in music. Can you replicate the ethereal melody by stepping on the stones in the right order?”
As you step on each stone, you notice a different note plays for each one. You press a button on the plaque and an 8-note melody plays as each stone is illuminated in sequence. You then have to replicate the melody exactly. Once you’re successful, the familiar swoosh and triumphant melody plays and you scan your amulet for another gem to be illuminated.
Story beat: Each grave has an epitaph written on it, giving history about the townspeople. These show how this town has punished people for being different ever since it was founded and why everyone hated Herb from the beginning.
Sample epitaph: “Samuel Hallow: Revered mayor and staunch disciplinarian. Having left his old village for being too lenient to naughty children on Halloween, he settled his own village where rowdiness and individuality would be punished as violent crimes. He brought conformity and peace to this town for 50 years until he died from frowning on his birthday.”
Key #5: The Oldest Grave (App-Exclusive)
The next key is hidden among the gravestones and you need to use the latest ghost hunting technology to find it. When you open the app, you see a button to open the Spirit Scanner 1999©, which can show you spirit traces and hidden messages. When you open this section of the app, you see a virtual plaque.
Plaque: “The oldest grave hides a secret that will be key to you getting out alive and the easiest way to find it is to follow the spirits.”
After you close the virtual plaque, you see a live camera view of the room with augmented reality ghost trails. As you follow the trail, you see handprints and blood splatters augmented on the graves. Eventually the ghost trails lead you to one faded, crumbling grave where you can’t make out the name. As you hold The Spirit Scanner up to it, you see the name “Herb Injure” above the dates “1600-1666”. You see an arrow pointing to a scan pad on the side of the grave. Tap your amulet to it to collect the 5th key. If you continue to hold your phone up, you will see the spirit of The Harbinger standing behind the grave and smiling at you.
Story beat: You learn that Herb Injure has a grave with his death dated 1666, exactly 200 years before he was supposedly locked in the mausoleum by the townspeople. This shows you that Herb might be more than just a ghost.

Bonus Challenges
Other than talking with characters and completing puzzles, you can collect various bonuses by completing challenges in the app or finding props within the graveyard. A few bonuses include:
You can find a dig site and a crate with an empty spot the same size as your amulet. There is a note from Thad saying that the amulet runes have a secret message. If you inspect your amulet you can read the message: “What you think, therefore I am.”
You will see runes and symbols carved into objects throughout the graveyard. If you check the app, there are challenges to find specific runes. Look for a scan pad under each rune and press your amulet to it to complete the challenge.
There are numbered childlike crayon drawings stuck to surfaces throughout the graveyard. If you follow the pictures in order it tells the story of the Harbinger bringing a premonition to someone and it coming true.
The app also has an augmented reality feature called Spirit Scanner 1999© that you can use to see hidden messages and ghosts. Clicking one on of these triggers a bonus challenge in the app. It could be trivia, simple games, or directions to a specific area of the graveyard. Complete the daily challenge to collect the digital supplies/badges.
Key #6: Mausoleum

After 45 minutes, your amulet starts glowing red and vibrating, indicating it’s time to head to the mausoleum at the back of the graveyard. There is small queue to the left of the entrance because guests are pulsed through this final experience. As you wait, you hear the voice of The Harbinger coming from inside the mausoleum. He says things like “I see a great challenge in your future with ghastly results” and “No hope waits for you inside, only fear.”
As you enter the mausoleum you see coffins on either side and a mirrored wall ahead of you. In the corner of the room is a single jack-o-lantern flickering. The ghost of The Harbinger appears in front of you and says: “I know you have been poisoned with fear by this town, but what happens next is up to you. If you come expecting malice, I am happy to provide. What you think, therefore I am. Make your choice.”
As he finishes talking, the words “trick” and “treat” glow on the wall in front of you. You hear the roof creak as the walls begin to close in. A pillar in the center of the wall is illuminated, showing 2 scan pads, and you hear the voice of The Harbinger say “choose your fate.” You have 15 seconds to scan your amulet to one of the pads. Once you do, the lights in the room go out. The only light is the red glow of your amulet, which pulsates for a moment before turning either purple (if you picked "trick") or orange (if you picked "treat").
No-Boo Experience:
If you don't want any jump scares in the finale, let the caretaker know and you will enter the mausoleum through a separate door on the right. As you enter, you see a jack-o-lantern in the corner and a mirrored wall in front of you. You hear the voice of The Harbinger say: “I sense great fear in you but respect your choice. You have chosen to bypass malice and forgiveness altogether and forge your own path. I’m happy to show you the way. What you think, therefore I am.”
A scan pad is then illuminated on a pillar in front of the mirrored wall. After scanning your amulet the glow turns from red to white.
Haunted House
Your path through the haunted house depends on which door you picked in the mausoleum. That choice also determines whether you get a fortune or a misfortune from the Harbinger at the end.

Ending #1: Trick
If you scanned the pad marked “Trick,” a purple light appears on the mirrored wall, tracing the outline of a door on the left as it opens.
Coffin Hallway:
You enter into a dirt tunnel with open coffins sticking out of the walls. A caretaker jumps out from between 2 coffins and says: “We tried to warn you. When you taunt The Harbinger, it brings nothing but misfortune. I think I know a way out, but it’s through the manor house.” You climb through a hole in the dirt.
Study:
You climb out through the back of a bookshelf into a study illuminated in purple light. The walls are lined with bookshelves and a piano plays a ghostly melody with no player. Everything in the study appears to be vibrating: books flying open, chandelier swinging, etc. A ghost jumps through a gap in the wall and swipes at you saying: “This is your last chance to get out before you’re trapped here forever, but be quiet, you’ve already awoken the dead.” A bookshelf across the room slides open revealing a narrow dirt passage.
Catacombs:
As you enter the passage, work lights illuminate your path in dim purple light. The path winds between coffins sticking out of the dirt as ghosts jump out at you around each corner. You emerge from the tunnel into a dimly lit workshop.

Workshop:
As you enter, you see hundreds of keys and jack-o-lanterns circling a workbench. A furnace in the corner glows red, emanating steam. Next to the workbench stands the ghost of The Harbinger. “I hope you’ve had a frightening time” he says. “It’s not every day you come face-to-face with the spirit of Halloween. It’s good to see my amulet can still draw people to me after all this time. But you shouldn’t be so quick to believe the worst in people. I only wanted to warn people, but the more evil they thought I was, the more evil I became. Now, let me give you the ‘trick’ you asked for.”
The Harbinger gestures to a portrait of a jack-o-lantern that swings open, revealing the exit. As you leave the room, The Harbinger says “Happy Halloween”, as the portrait swings closed.
Exit Hallway:
In front of you is a screen showing your misfortune from The Harbinger. Once you scan to collect it, the amulet vibrates and turns off. You exit down the hallway and return your amulet to a caretaker.
Sample Misfortune:
“Every time your phone should ring, may it have nothing but scams to bring.”
Ending #2: Treat
If you scanned the pad marked “Treat,” an orange light appears on the mirrored wall, tracing the outline of a door on the right as it opens.
Coffin Hallway:
You enter into a dirt tunnel with open coffins sticking out of the walls. A caretaker jumps out from between 2 coffins and says: “I knew they were wrong about him. We just had to ignore the fear to see the truth.”
Storage Room:
You enter into a storage room, bathed in orange light from a swinging bulb. The room is lined with empty boxes marked “Halloween Decorations” and glowing jack-o-lanterns.
Study:
You climb out through the back of a bookshelf into a study illuminated in orange light. The walls are lined with bookshelves and a piano plays an upbeat, spooky melody with no player. Vintage Halloween decorations adorn every surface, from paper die-cuts of witches to illuminated blown-molds of ghosts. Someone dressed in a ghost costume jumps through a gap in the wall saying “Trick-or-treat! Head through the manor, he wants to celebrate with you.”
Porch:
You exit outside onto the porch of the manor. As you get towards the front railing, you can see out over the entire graveyard. You weave between chairs and trunks, heading towards another door. As you approach the door someone dressed in a skeleton costume jumps out and says “Trick-or-treat!”

Foyer:
You enter into a foyer with a grand staircase leading to a balcony. To your left is a side table with a bowl of Halloween candy. The room is elaborately decorated in vintage Halloween decorations. You hear the same spooky, upbeat melody playing as you see a spirit gliding back and forth on the balcony. While you're distracted, a witch jumps out and says “trick or treat.” As you reach the bottom of the staircase, you look up to the balcony and see the spirit is just someone in a costume, riding a skateboard back and forth.
Hallway:
You enter into a narrow hallway bathed in orange light that is lined with paintings of The Harbinger at various times throughout history. He is handing out candy to children in Halloween costumes.
Workshop:
You enter into a workshop with hundreds of keys and jack-o-lanterns circling a workbench. A furnace in the corner glows red, emanating steam. Next to the workbench stands The Harbinger in his human from as Herb Injure. “Did you enjoy the festivities?” he asks. “There hasn’t been a Halloween celebration in this town for many years. And It’s not every day you come face-to-face with the spirit of Halloween. It’s good to see my amulet can still draw people to me after all this time. And thank you for not being blinded by the rumors and fear. I’ve only ever tried to warn people so they could avoid misfortune. But if enough people are convinced I’m evil then that’s how I’m known. Now, let me give you the ‘treat’ you asked for.”
The Harbinger gestures to a portrait of a jack-o-lantern that swings open, revealing the exit. As you leave the room, The Harbinger says “Happy Halloween”, as the portrait swings closed.
Exit Hallway:
In front of you is a screen showing your fortune from The Harbinger. Once you scan to collect it, the amulet vibrates and turns off. You exit down the hallway and return your amulet to a caretaker.
Sample Fortune:
“Every winter when your coat comes out, may you find money in the pockets or there about.”
Ending #3: No-Boo
After scanning the pad in the “No-boo” version of the mausoleum a white light appears on the mirrored wall in front of you, tracing the outline of a door in the center as it opens.
Coffin Hallway:
You enter the next room into a dirt tunnel with open coffins sticking out of the wall in front of you. A caretaker employee approaches you and says: “Just keep your head down and head through here. It’s best not to get involved in the plight of the spirits.”
A section of wall to your right slides open, revealing a secret passageway. You enter and leave the room.
Hallway:
You enter into a narrow hallway dimly lit in white light. The walls are lined with paintings of The Harbinger in various times throughout history with children in Halloween costumes. He is either handing them candy or scaring them. You continue forward and the long hallway ends at a portrait of The Harbinger blocking the path.
The Harbinger in the portrait comes alive and speaks to you. “I hope you’ve had a ghoulishly good time” he says. “It’s not every day you come face-to-face with the spirit of Halloween. It’s good to see my amulet can still draw people to me after all this time. You might be smarter than the others. You see that beings are both inherently good and evil. It’s all in what they choose to believe. Now, let me give you what you asked for. Happy Halloween.”
The portrait lifts upward revealing the exit.
Exit Hallway:
After exiting there is a screen directly in front of you displaying your fortune from The Harbinger. There is a scan pad underneath for you to collect it. Once you do, the amulet vibrates and the lights turn off. You turn left and exit down the hallway and return your amulet to a caretaker.
Sample Fortune:
“Should you be enjoying the outdoors, may the sun only shine and rain no more.”
Story Ending
The spirit of Halloween is known by many names and has taken many forms, but for the last 200+ years he has been know as The Harbinger. He is a neutral spirit that becomes whatever people think he is. Every Halloween he can bring you either a “trick” or a “treat” based on how you perceive him. If you feel fear and hatred, he brings that back to you in in the form of misfortune. If you don’t give in to the rumors of evil and fear, he rewards you in the form of a fortune. What you believe is up to you.
Based on the path/ending people choose they will feel differently about The Harbinger and it can spark debate and encourage people to return and see the other endings.
Store
After returning your amulet it appears you are on an abandoned road running behind the cemetery. Above you is a banner staked to the ground saying “Halloween Secret Sale” and the road is lined with cars, vans and popup tents full of merchandise. The trunks of cars are open with displays of smaller merchandise and the backs of vans are open with t-shirts and larger merchandise. You weave through the cars and tents and see a food truck offering Halloween-candy-inspired desserts. At the end of the road is a camper with an awning drawn over a row of cash registers.
This secret popup sale happens every Halloween night on the abandoned road behind the Hallow Cemetery. Because Halloween is banned in Hallow Hollow, this secret yearly convoy of vendors is the only place you can buy Halloween merchandise in town. But be quick because you never know when the police might show up and break things up.
After you’ve made your purchases and had a Halloween treat or two, you can exit the experience next to the cash registers.
App Results & Return Visits
After you complete the experience, the fortune or misfortune you received shows up in the app, along with any keys and supplies/badges you collected throughout the experience. If you come back multiple times, you see your new fortunes/misfortunes popup in this list. You can try to collect them all. Depending on the challenges you completed, you might get bonus content like additional blogs from Thad Nocturnous or video messages from the other walk-around characters. There is also a leaderboard you can check to see how many challenges others have completed. There is a leaderboard for completing the most challenges in one 45 minute run and an overall leaderboard for completing the most challenges across multiple visits.
